چکیده

Manganese in the tissues of normal animals may be regarded as a rare element. In traces it is known to be present in a number of marine animals, as was shown by Pichard.’ Hoppe-Seyler2 is authority for the statement that it is not infrequently present in human blood and in the liver: but it is neither constant in its occurrence nor significant in amount. Among the lower animals there is at least one instance on record of the normal and physiological presence of manganese in the blood and tissues. In the blood of the mollusk, Pinna sqz~~+~osa, manganese is believed to serve a respiratory function. According to the analyses made by Griffiths,3 manganese is present in the blood to the extent of 0.35 per cent. So unique was this discovery, however, that it has received little more than the passing interest given a curious fact devoid of any real physiological interest. We have to report in this preliminary notice what seems to be another normal exampleof its use in themetabolism of the fresh water clams, U&o and Anodonta, so abundant in the lakes and rivers of the Mississippi basin. While our specimens were obtained from the Madison lakes of Wisconsin only, they are thoroughly representative of the two species in every other respect, so that we are confident that specimens from other localities will exhibit this same metabolic idiosyncrasy. This point, however, will be definitely settled as soon as more material can be obtained. While the qualitative recognition of manganese in tissues containing such considerable amounts as are present in this animal

Accumulation, depuration and risk assessment of cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) in clam (Corbicula fluminea) (O. F. Müller, 1774) under laboratory conditions

The present study investigated the accumulation and depuration of two heavy metals Cd and Pb in the freshwater clam  (Corbicula fluminea) under laboratory conditions. Treated clams were exposed to single and combined treatments of Cd and Pb at the concentration of 5 mg L-1 and 10.5 mg L-1 for 10 days, respectively. The animals were then placed in metal free water for the following 5 days for de...

Thein vitro and in vivo Effect of Clinoptiloliteon Decreasing of Copper Ion and DNA Damage of Anodonta Cygnea

The ability of natural zeolite (Clinoptilolite) to remove copper from aqueous ecosystem was studied in real and laboratory conditions. Fresh water mussels (Anodonta Cygnea) of different sizes were Exposed to copper (150, 350, 450 µgl-1) for 10 days. Copper exposure induced DNA damage in the haemolymph cells of Anodonta of all sizes. In connection with real samples, the amount of damage and even...

Effects of Hyperthyroidism on the Serum Levels of Vanadium and Manganese trace Elements in Rats

Introduction: Trace elements are important for the normal function of thyroid and prevention of its diseases. Normal activities of thyroid including the synthesis of thyroid hormones and regulation of metabolism are dependent on the presence of trace elements. On the other hand, thyroid hormones may also affect the trace element levels. In this study, we investigated the effects of induced h...

Assessment of Anodonta cygnea as a Biomonitor Agent for Copper and Zinc in Anzali Wetland, Iran

Background: Anzali wetland has been subjected to high levels of pollution due to contamination from several industrial sites in addition to agricultural chemicals. Mussels have been widely used for monitoring pollution in aquatic ecosystems, because they, as filter feeders, bioaccumulate pollutants. Therefore we decided to evaluate Anodonta cygnea for its application as a bio-monitor for copp...

Concentration of Heavy Metals in Drinking Water Sources of Karaj in 2017: A Descriptive Study

Background and Objectives: Heavy metals enter water supply sources in different ways such as natural or artificial and when they enter the food chain and accumulate in tissues, they cause harmful effects on human health. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the concentration of heavy metals in drinking water sources in Karaj and compare it with national standards. Materials and Me...
